About Me

My photo
I grew up watching 'This Old House' and remodeling our Northern Californian rambler with my dad as a teen. I have a love of old homes and structures. In a time where homes are made and sold in weeks I want to preserve the old home's history, uniqueness and limitless potential.

outdoor lighting ideas

We have a 1940's red brick house with black shutters and a green door. Our exterior light fixtures are white and blend into the house.

The previous owners added an extra large garage onto the side of the house. The garage door is white, surrounded by white vinyl, it's all very... well, white.

To give the garage door a little character I bought black iron hardware to give it a carriage house feel. The hardware is decorative, not functional and only cost about $25 for the most basic 6-piece set. (examples shown below).

I would like to add the 2 lights below to go on either side of our garage door. The black lighting, with the black iron garage door accents will hopefully make the garage a design feature and not just an "add on" after-thought.

I love the hanging lantern below for our front porch. And it should fit with the older style of our home. We have an entryway overhang that will accommodate this style of lighting.
